One of the most common questions I hear from incoming students is: "How thick should my wetsuit be?" Get it wrong and you will either freeze through your session or sweat so much you can barely move. Here is the definitive month-by-month guide for the Essaouira Atlantic.

Essaouira Water Temperature by Month

  • December–February: 16–17°C (60–63°F). Cold. Full 4/3mm wetsuit, booties, and hood recommended.
  • March–April: 17–18°C (63–65°F). Cool. 4/3mm or 3/2mm with booties.
  • May–June: 19–20°C (66–68°F). Comfortable. 3/2mm full suit.
  • July–August: 21–22°C (70–72°F). Warm. 3/2mm or a 2mm spring suit. Some strong-hearted riders go boardshorts + rashguard.
  • September–October: 20–21°C (68–70°F). Comfortable. 3/2mm is perfect.
  • November: 18–19°C (65–66°F). Cool again. Return to the 4/3mm.

Important note: the upwelling effect means that on high-wind days (particularly July and August), cold deep water is pushed to the surface, and the temperature can drop 3–4°C unexpectedly. Always have a 3/2mm available even in summer.

Choosing the Right Wetsuit Construction

Not all 3/2mm wetsuits are equal. For Essaouira specifically, look for:

  • Chest zip or back zip: Both work well. Chest zip offers slightly more flexibility and less water flush — preferred for kitesurfing. Back zip is easier to put on alone.
  • Glued and blind-stitched seams: Standard for any quality suit. Avoid cheaper taped-only seam suits for the Atlantic which generates real force on your suit during wipe-outs.
  • Thermal lining in the core: Brands like O'Neill Hyperfreak and Rip Curl E-Bomb use thermal lining in the torso. Worth the premium for those long kite sessions.

For Kitesurfing Specifically

Kitesurfing generates more wind exposure than surfing. Your torso is out of the water more often, and the wind evaporation cools you down fast. As a rule, go one thickness heavier than you think you need for your first kite session, until your body acclimates to the conditions. A 3/2mm in 20°C water will feel colder when you are standing on a board in 25 knots of wind than it would lying on a surfboard.

Wetsuit Care in Morocco

The Essaouira sun is fierce. Dry your wetsuit inside out in the shade — direct UV light degrades neoprene quickly. Rinse it with fresh water every day (our school has freshwater rinsing stations). Never leave a wetsuit balled up in a bag; the seams will split in the heat.

Can I Rent a Wetsuit at Wavescape?

Yes. Our school maintains a warehouse of clean, well-maintained wetsuits in all sizes including XXS–XXXL and children's sizes. If you are uncertain about which thickness to bring, pack a 3/2mm and rent a 4/3mm from us if the conditions demand it. This approach avoids the hassle of carrying two suits in your luggage.
