Nearly 40% of guests at Essaouira Wavescape are solo female travellers. This number has grown every year since we opened, and for good reason. Essaouira is fundamentally different from the busy cities of Marrakech or Fes — it is smaller, more relaxed, deeply international, and genuinely welcoming to independent women. Here is the honest guide that I wish I had read before my own first solo trip.

Is Essaouira Safe for Solo Women?

The short answer: yes, significantly more so than most major Moroccan cities. The reasons are structural:

  • UNESCO city tourism: Essaouira has been welcoming international visitors since the 1960s. The Medina residents are accustomed to solo female tourists in a way that smaller inland towns are not.
  • The wind culture: The kitesurf and surf community creates an international, egalitarian atmosphere on the beach. Women in wetsuits and sports gear are the norm, not the exception.
  • Compact geography: The Medina is small enough to navigate confidently within an afternoon. There are no sprawling suburbs or confusing districts to get lost in.

That said, respectful awareness of local culture makes every experience smoother. Cover your shoulders when walking through the souks. Keep a firm, confident pace in the Medina. If someone's attention is unwanted, a simple "no thank you" in French ("non merci") and continued walking is almost always sufficient.

The Surf & Kite Experience as a Woman

In the water and on the beach, Essaouira is remarkably equal. Our school has female instructors on staff, and we actively ensure female students are paired with instructors they feel comfortable with. The international surf community in the bay is welcoming and inclusive. You are far more likely to receive enthusiastic encouragement from fellow riders than any form of unwanted attention.

For your first sessions, we recommend:

  • Booking with a certified school (like Wavescape) where safety protocols, radio helmets, and small group sizes create a structured environment.
  • Staying at a Riad or surf hostel where the owner knows you by name. The Medina accommodation scene in Essaouira is built on personal service and genuine hospitality.
  • Joining the social sunset sessions on the beach. The kitesurfing community gathers at the south end of the bay at sunset daily. It is one of the most friendly and inclusive outdoor communities I have experienced anywhere in the world.

Recommended Solo Female Itinerary: 7 Days

  1. Day 1: Arrive, check into your Riad, walk the Medina and ramparts at sunset. Eat grilled fish at the port.
  2. Days 2–4: Morning surf or kitesurf lessons. Afternoons: argan oil cooperative visit, Mellah quarter walk, coffee with a book in a Medina café.
  3. Day 5: Day trip to Sidi Kaouki. Lunch by the ocean. Visit Diabat village on the way back.
  4. Day 6: Hammam morning (ask your Riad to book the women's session at a local hammam — a genuinely transformative experience). Free surf in the afternoon.
  5. Day 7: Sunrise beach walk, Medina souvenir shopping (argan oil, thuya wood, spices), evening flight or bus to Marrakech.

What to Pack as a Solo Female Traveller

  • For the beach: Rash guard or lycra suit for sessions. Changing at the school is comfortable and private.
  • For the city: Light scarves that can double as shawls. They weigh nothing and open every cultural door.
  • Practical: A door wedge for added security in cheaper accommodation. A portable phone charger. A local SIM card with data for Google Maps.
  • Health: Sun protection (factor 50+ for Atlantic reflection), lip balm with SPF, and quality earplugs for the Medina's 5am call to prayer if you are a light sleeper.

The Community You Will Find

The best part of solo travel in Essaouira is that you will not be alone for long. Our school connects guests with each other from day one. By your third session, you will have WhatsApp contacts from six different countries, plans for a sunset beach session, and possibly a cooking class invitation from your Riad host. Essaouira does that to people. Come alone. Leave with family.
