Master Instructor
Every surf school claims to be "the best." We prefer to let the people behind the teaching do the talking. At Essaouira Wavescape, our instructors are not travelling coaches who came here for the season. They are local professionals who grew up riding this Atlantic, speak multiple languages, and have spent years studying the science of surf instruction. Here is who you will meet on the beach.
Before we introduce the team, it is worth explaining what drives our approach. Most surf schools focus on getting students standing up as fast as possible — because a student who stands up is a happy student who leaves a good review. We focus on something different: building a surfer who can function safely and independently in the ocean.
That means teaching ocean awareness before board technique. It means spending a full session on paddling and positioning before attempting a pop-up. It means honest feedback, even when the honest feedback is "not today — let's work on this instead." Our students might not all stand up on day one. But by day three, they understand the ocean in a way that keeps them safe for life.
All Wavescape surf instructors hold current ISA (International Surfing Association) certification. Our kitesurf coaches are IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) certified. These are not decorative titles — they are international safety standards that govern how we manage students in the water, how we assess risk, and how we respond to emergencies.
When you book with a certified school, you are choosing qualified professionals who have been trained in water safety, CPR, first aid, and surf rescue. In a sport that takes place in the open ocean, this is not a luxury — it is the baseline.
Essaouira draws visitors from across Europe and beyond. Our team teaches confidently in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic. During your lesson, you will be coached in the language you are most comfortable learning in. Technical concepts are much easier to absorb in your mother tongue — an important detail that many schools overlook.
Our instructors have surfed this bay every day for years. They know which sandbar is producing the best waves this week, where the wind shadow sits in the afternoon, and which side of the beach to avoid when the tide is dropping. This local knowledge is impossible to acquire from a guidebook or a forecast app. It comes from being in the water, every day, across all conditions and seasons.
When you choose Wavescape, you are not hiring a visiting coach with a generic program. You are hiring the locals who love this ocean as deeply as any surfer can love a break they have called home their entire lives.
Over the years, Wavescape has evolved from a surf school into a community. We have former students who return every year, some of whom now surf Sidi Kaouki independently and occasionally help us coach juniors during their visits. That is the relationship we aim to build with every person who paddles out with us.
Get in touch to talk about your specific goals, ask about our instructors, or simply say hello. We are happy to help you plan the trip that is right for you.
